Our recent paper published in Health & Social Care in the Community looked into what parents go through when they try to get help for challenges that affect their parenting.

Here’s a summary of the key points:

Barriers to Seeking Help: One of the most striking findings was the significant barriers parents encounter when trying to access support. Many parents reported feeling judged, blamed, and discriminated against by professionals, which often discouraged them from seeking help.

Negative Interactions: It was disheartening to learn that many parents had negative experiences with professionals. Parents described encounters where professionals were unwilling to listen, disrespectful, and dismissive of their complex life circumstances. This lack of empathy and understanding left parents feeling blamed for broader socioeconomic issues beyond their control.

Positive Interactions: On a more hopeful note, parents also shared positive experiences. Parents valued professionals who engaged in genuine, empathetic relationships. These professionals provided both emotional and practical support, empowering parents to make positive changes in their lives.

Holistic Support: Effective support, as highlighted by parents, goes beyond addressing immediate issues. It includes assistance with daily living activities, social integration, and overall well-being, ensuring a holistic approach to care.

Consistency and Continuity: Consistency and continuity of care providers emerged as crucial factors. Frequent changes in support workers can disrupt therapeutic relationships and hinder progress, making it harder for parents to feel supported.

Community Resources: Facilitating access to community resources and building social connections were also essential. Parents benefited greatly from being part of a supportive community, which helped reduce feelings of isolation and improved their overall well-being.

Overall, our study underscores the need for systemic changes in how support services are delivered. By focusing on empathetic, consistent, and holistic care, we can better support parents facing adversities, ultimately helping children thrive within their families and communities.
