The safeguarding project explores how nurses and midwives keep children safe from abuse and neglect through a public health approach. Many people have asked me what a public health approach is, and what this means for nurses' and midwives' practice. In summary, this means our core focus is on preventing child abuse and intervening early when families are experiencing adversities. This will reduce the number of children who experience abuse or neglect and reach the criteria for a child protection intervention. I've put together an infographic based on the emerging themes from the Safeguarding Project to demonstrate what this can look like for nurses and midwives working with children.
